Focus program

Understanding why — not just silencing symptoms

While medication can be an important part of treatment, meaningful mental health care goes far beyond simply writing prescriptions. This is care for people who want to understand why they are experiencing symptoms, and who prefer medication used judiciously and strategically rather than as a first or only solution.

A calm, private space set up for a telehealth psychiatric appointment

Who it's for: Adults who want to understand the drivers of their symptoms, prefer medication used strategically rather than as a first resort, or feel stuck after past trials.

What to expect

A comprehensive evaluation

A thorough assessment of current symptoms, mental health history, medical background, and lifestyle — and how all of it is affecting daily life — so the plan is built on a clear picture rather than a symptom checklist.

Contributing factors taken seriously

Sleep, nutrition, stress physiology, hormones, inflammation, trauma history and lifestyle patterns are explored as part of the treatment plan, not treated as someone else's department.

Conservative, evidence-informed prescribing

Where medication helps, we explain what it does and does not do, and aim for the lowest effective dose. Many clients here prefer to use medication strategically, and want to understand the options they were never walked through before. Because the goal is sustainable treatment, we do not prescribe benzodiazepines; there are safer long-term options for anxiety and sleep, and we will walk you through them.

A collaborative, transparent plan

Motivational interviewing, CBT-informed and mindfulness-based strategies support the medication plan, and progress is reviewed with you at follow-up visits.

Who this suits

  • People who want to understand the drivers of their symptoms, not only reduce them
  • People who prefer a conservative prescriber and want medication used judiciously
  • People who feel “stuck”, or who have tried medications before without fully understanding their options
  • People who want a collaborative, transparent approach and a plan that fits everyday life

Common questions

Is this instead of medication?
No. It is psychiatric medication management practiced in context: medication remains a central tool, but it is chosen, dosed and reviewed alongside the rest of your health rather than in isolation.
Do you prescribe benzodiazepines?
No. NCNE does not prescribe benzodiazepines (such as Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan or Valium) or opioid-based medications. Anxiety, panic and sleep are treated with non-habit-forming options, and if a benzodiazepine is genuinely what you need, we will say so early and help you find the right prescriber rather than waste your first visit.
Do you offer genetic testing to help choose a medication?
Yes — NCNE offers GeneSight pharmacogenomic testing, an at-home cheek swab reporting how your genes may affect the way your body processes certain psychiatric medications. It fits this kind of care well, particularly when past trials have gone badly for reasons nobody could explain. It is worth being clear about its limits: it does not diagnose anything and it does not identify which medication will work best. It is one more piece of the picture, and it is always optional. See GeneSight testing for the detail.
Can you help me come off a medication?
Yes, for antidepressants and most psychiatric medications: tapering is a normal part of this work when it is clinically appropriate — done gradually and with monitoring, never by stopping on your own between visits. See the supervised tapering page for how that works. We do not manage benzodiazepine tapers.

Cost

The program is not billed separately: it is how visits are conducted. Standard initial evaluation and follow-up rates apply. See Insurance & Fees for rates, in-network details and superbills.
