How to taper off Wellbutrin — and what “Wellbutrin withdrawal” really is

Wellbutrin (bupropion) is the antidepressant people most often search for by asking whether it has withdrawal at all — and the honest answer is: less than the SSRIs, but not none. Bupropion works on different brain chemistry, so the electric-shock sensations and dizziness that make stopping an SSRI miserable are rare. What does happen when it is stopped abruptly is a return of low mood, fatigue and poor concentration, sometimes within days. A supervised taper keeps that gradual and watched. We do not publish a taper schedule here, because the right one depends on your dose, the form you take, and what the medication was doing for you.

Why stopping Wellbutrin suddenly causes withdrawal

Bupropion is not an SSRI. It works on norepinephrine and dopamine rather than serotonin, and that changes the story of stopping it. The classic antidepressant discontinuation syndrome — brain zaps, dizziness, nausea — is uncommon with bupropion, because those symptoms are largely a serotonin phenomenon. What people do report after stopping quickly is a return of the things bupropion was helping with: flat mood, low energy, poor concentration, irritability, and for some, a resurgence of appetite or of the urge to smoke. Those are real, they are unpleasant, and they are easier to manage when the dose comes down in steps rather than all at once.

Bupropion and its active breakdown products leave the body over roughly a day, which places it in the middle of the antidepressants. It is the extended-release forms that complicate a taper: the sustained-release and extended-release tablets cannot be split without destroying the release mechanism, so the available strengths set the size of each step.

Why the last steps of a Wellbutrin taper are the hardest

Because bupropion is not serotonergic, the hyperbolic-taper logic that governs SSRIs applies less directly here, and many people come off bupropion more easily than they expect. The end of the taper still deserves care, for a different reason: the lowest step is where the medication's effect on energy and mood is finally gone, and that is the point at which a return of depression is most likely to show itself. There is no liquid form of bupropion in the United States. The immediate-release tablet exists and can be split, which is one way to make smaller steps possible; the other is stepping down through the extended-release strengths. Which is right depends on why you are taking it and how you have tolerated the forms before — that is a decision for the visit, not a webpage.

How a supervised Wellbutrin taper works at NCNE

  • A review before anything changes. Your current dose, how long you have taken bupropion, why you started, what has happened on any previous attempt to stop, and whether now is a sensible time — a taper started in the middle of a house move or a new job is a taper that gets abandoned.
  • A written, stepwise plan — individual to you. Reductions are planned in steps, with the smallest steps at the end, using tablets, split tablets or the liquid form as the step requires. The plan is a direction, not a fixed calendar; it is adjusted as you go and never changed between visits without talking first.
  • Short check-ins while it happens. A rough patch is handled by pausing or slowing down, not by pushing through or giving up. Telehealth makes those check-ins easy to keep.
  • Withdrawal and relapse told apart. Timing, the type of symptoms and the response to a small dose change usually distinguish discontinuation symptoms from a genuine return of depression or anxiety. That judgment is the point of being monitored.

Common questions about tapering off Wellbutrin

Does Wellbutrin have withdrawal symptoms?
Fewer and different ones than SSRIs. The classic discontinuation syndrome — brain zaps, dizziness, nausea, flu-like feelings — is uncommon with bupropion because it doesn’t act on serotonin. What people report after stopping quickly is a return of low mood, tiredness, irritability and difficulty concentrating, sometimes with headache or increased appetite. Those can be mistaken for withdrawal and are often, in fact, the depression the medication was treating.
Can I stop Wellbutrin cold turkey?
The prescribing information advises against stopping bupropion abruptly, and so do we. Even though the physical discontinuation symptoms are milder than with an SSRI, an abrupt stop removes all of the medication's effect on mood and energy at once, and that’s when a relapse is most likely to arrive unnoticed. A stepped reduction with check-ins is safer, and rarely slow.
How long does it take to taper off Wellbutrin?
It depends on the dose, how long you have taken bupropion, and what happened on any earlier attempt — which is why there’s no honest standard answer. A short course at a low dose may take a few weeks to come off; years of use, or a history of withdrawal symptoms, may take many months. The plan is set at the evaluation and revised at every check-in; it’s a direction, not a calendar.
Why can't I just cut my Wellbutrin XL in half?
Because the extended-release tablet works by releasing the drug slowly through a coating and matrix that splitting destroys — a halved XL tablet isn’t half a dose, it’s a fast-release dose. Smaller steps come from the lower-strength tablets or from the immediate-release form, and we choose between them at the evaluation.
I take Wellbutrin to stop smoking. Does that change the taper?
It changes what we watch for. Bupropion reduces the urge to smoke, and that urge can return as the dose falls. If you started it to quit smoking, the taper is planned around where you’re with that, and we’ll talk about what else supports staying quit before the dose comes down.
Is it withdrawal, or is my depression back?
Discontinuation symptoms usually arrive within days of a reduction, include physical features such as dizziness, nausea or brain zaps, and settle quickly if the previous dose is briefly restored. A genuine return of depression builds over weeks, looks like the original problem, and doesn’t shift with a small dose change. Monitoring through the taper exists to tell those two apart before either is acted on.
