Adult ADHD Evaluation and Medication Management

ADHD in adults rarely looks like the child in the classroom. It looks like a career of near-misses, a house of unfinished things, a mind that is brilliant in a crisis and absent in a meeting, and a growing suspicion — often planted by a diagnosed child or a partner — that the disorganisation is not a character flaw. An evaluation settles the question properly, and treatment, where it is warranted, is more varied than the stimulant everyone has heard of.

A calm, private space set up for a telehealth psychiatric appointment

What it can look like

  • Difficulty starting, finishing or switching between tasks, however important they are
  • Losing track of time, deadlines, keys, and the thread of conversations
  • Restlessness — physical, or a mind that will not idle
  • Impulsive decisions, interrupting, and a low tolerance for boredom
  • A pattern reaching back to school years, often with anxiety or low mood layered on top

These are common experiences, not a checklist for self-diagnosis. A comprehensive evaluation is how we understand what is going on for you specifically.

How NCNE can help

  • A comprehensive evaluation that takes a proper history — childhood, school, work, sleep, what has been tried — and considers what else could explain the symptoms
  • A plan that looks at the whole picture: ADHD alongside the anxiety, depression or sleep problems that so often travel with it
  • Non-stimulant medication where it fits — often the first choice when anxiety is part of the picture, and not a controlled substance
  • Stimulant decisions made at the evaluation, within the rules each state sets for telehealth prescribing of controlled substances
  • Coordination with an ADHD coach or therapist where structure and skills are the missing piece

About medication

Medication is one option among several. At NCNE we believe meaningful care goes beyond writing prescriptions — a thorough evaluation, collaboration, education, and an individualized plan come first, and supplements, lifestyle changes, a referral for therapy, or simply watching and waiting are all on the table. Nothing is prescribed without you understanding what it does, what it does not do, and how we will know whether it is working.

Common questions

Can adult ADHD be diagnosed by telehealth?
Yes. The diagnosis rests on a careful history and validated rating scales, neither of which needs a room. What matters is thoroughness — childhood and school history, current functioning, sleep, mood, substance use and what has been tried — and ruling out the things that mimic ADHD, particularly anxiety, depression and poor sleep.
Will I be prescribed a stimulant?
Not automatically, and not first. The evaluation looks at the whole picture; for many adults, particularly those with anxiety, a non-stimulant is the better first plan. Where a stimulant is the right choice, the decision is made at the evaluation within the rules your state sets for prescribing controlled substances by telehealth.
I have anxiety too. Which gets treated first?
Usually the one causing more trouble, with the other re-measured a few weeks later — and a non-stimulant is often the bridge when both are significant, because it helps attention without aggravating anxiety. There is a separate page on ADHD and anxiety together.
Do you see children or teenagers with ADHD?
No. NCNE sees adults aged 18 to 65 only. If you’re looking for care for a child, a pediatric or child-and-adolescent psychiatric practice is the right place.

Taking the first step toward better mental health can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. Contact NCNE to learn more about our services and discover how personalized psychiatric medication management can support your goals.
